For the second straight night, the #11 Green Knights toppled a fellow Top 20 opponent, this time besting #19 Ramapo by a 4-3 score.
Once again it was the line of
TJ Bayer-
Patrick Freitas-
Shane Tobin who provided the fireworks - accounting for that final three goals of the game as SJR climbed back from a 3-1 defecit in the second period.
But it was senior
Garrett Kata who got SJR on the board mid-way through the first period, scoring off a face-off win by classmate
Thomas Hilliard and assisted by
Finn Sweeney. Despite a 12-10 shot advantage in the first, the Green Knights would trail 2-1 at the break.
The second stanza saw the Raiders extend their lead on a shorthanded goal before Bayer, Freitas and Tobin went to work.
What started as a defensive zone turned into a goal just a few seconds later as Freitas took a Bayer face-off win end-to-end and buried the puck for his second goal in as many nights. Minutes later, another face-off deep in SJR led territory saw Bayer get the win to captain
Dylan Stiles. Stiles chipped the puck out of the zone where Tobin picked up and scored on a 2-on-1. It was the freshman's second goal in the Holiday Tournament and set off a celebration in the raucous student section as the score was tied late in the second period.
After killing off two penalties early in the third, SJR was back on the attack. Again, it was the Bayer-Freitas-Tobin line, with a little help from Stiles. Stiles made a brilliant backhand pass to Freitas after gaining zone entry. While the initial shot went wide, the Green Knights maintained possession for 45 seconds before Freitas eventually found the back of the net, assisted by Bayer and Stiles.
With just under three minutes to go, SJR has its first lead of the night. A lead it would hold with a fierce forecheck in the final minute.
Frank Perrone and
Garrett Kata kept the puck below Ramapo's goal line for nearly a full minute before time expired on the 4-3 victory.
Junior
Joseph Monte earned his fourth victory of the season, making 18 saves.
SJR is off today, but hosts #7 Seton Hall Prep in Gordon Conference action on Thursday, December 30 at Sport-O-Rama. Puck drop is set for 8:15 p.m.
