Keith Bland '93 was inducted to the New Jersey High School Hockey Hall of Fame on Sunday, September 26. The bi-annual celebration was postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic.
The rescheduled event took place at Mayfair Farms in West Orange.
Bland, who starred for the Green Knights on the blue line, helped SJR to a state championship in 1991 and Gordon Cup titles in 1990 and 1992. He served as a rare three-year captain for SJR and a four-year varsity contributor, tallying 20 goals and 27 assists as a defenseman during his senior campaign.
He later played for NCAA Division I hockey for Alaska Anchorage before reaching the ECHL with Baton Rouge, then an affiliate of the St. Louis Blues. After his playing career concluded, Bland joined the SJR coaching staff as an assistant in the early 2000s before taking over the reins at Paramus Catholic until 2021.
Bland joined Max Middendorf '85, Ken Blum '89, former head coach Frank Horan and the 1983-84 team as SJR inductees into the NJHSHHOF. Middendorf skated for the Quebec Nordiques and Edmonton Oilers and helped Team USA to a bronze medal at the 1986, after leading SJR to the 1984 state championship. Blum led the Green Knights to a co-state championship in 1989, scoring 50 goals and adding 53 assists as a senior. Horan, alongside his wife Barbara, won two state titles in seven seasons behind the bench and put the Green Knights on the map as a hockey force. Horan's 83-84 team remains a standard bearer, posting an amazing 26-0-1 record, scoring 279 goals while allowing only 39, besting Brick for the state crown.
