Hockey's Balanced Effort Leads to Thrilling OT Win

On Friday night, the Green Knights hockey team bested #20 Glen Rock in an overtime thriller. Despite dominating the run of play and outshooting the Panthers 46-21, SJR found itself deadlocked at 4-4 after regulation play in the quarterfinals of the Bergen County Tournament.

Overtime did not last long. Senior Garrett Kata scored less than two minutes into the extra frame to send SJR to the semifinals. Kata had been robbed late in the third period, but took advantage of the second opportunity and gave the Green Knights a much-needed victory.

The win puts SJR in the semifinals against #2 Don Bosco Prep on Monday, December 17 at 8:00 p.m. The other semifinal will see #8 Northern Highlands, which beat Ramapo, against Mahwah, who bested #4 Bergen Catholic.

SJR trailed Glen Rock, 1-0, after the first stanza, but its relentless pursuit finaly paid dividends with two quick goals in the second period by seniors Dylan Stiles and Sean Joyce. While Glen Rock regained the lead later in the period, senior Patrick Freitas scored just seven seconds later to keep things even going to the final period.

In the third, Freitas struck again to give SJR the lead before the Panthers knotted things up with three minutes to play.

Junior Nick Wronski made 17 saves for the win.
