Hockey History

The history of hockey at SJR dates all the way back to the late 60s when students played on the frozen pond behind the school. Since becoming a varsity sport in 1975, the Green Knights have been one of the premier programs in the state of New Jersey, earning 658 wins (.658 win%) and 24 championships through the 2021 season.

Highlights include the 1984 team that ripped through the season with a 27-0-1 record en route to the school's first state championship. The 1985 team repeated at state champs before the '86 season saw a move to the Gordon Conference. The Green Knights immediately made it know they belonged, winning the league and Gordon Cup titles.

In 1989, SJR put forth one of its best teams and earned a co-state championship after a measles outbreak at Delbarton prevented the playing of the final. Nonetheless, the two teams would meet again in 1991 and 1992 in the championship game. In '91, SJR claimed victory, earning its fourth state championship, while the Green Wave returned the favor in '92.

It would be some time before SJR returned to that level of success, dropping out of the Gordon Conference after the 2001 season in favor of more geographically-compatible play. In 2013, Coach Larry Mahurter '87, a member of those first two state title winners, returned as head coach and reeled off five straight league titles before moving the program back to the Gordon Conference in 2021.

In 2020, SJR won league and cup championships in both the Big North (Gold) and the Egan Conferences, with wins over Lakeland and St. John Vianney, respectively, to claim the crowns.
