Sunday was Championship Day in Atlantic City for two Green Knights' wrestlers.
Both Michael Dellagatta and James Mullen were both crowned individual state champions at the NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships. The title was Dellagatta's 1st state championship and Mullen's 3rd.
Dellagatta '23 entered the bracket as the 1st seed in the 190 pound weight class. His first two matches were won by pin. The two wins put him into the quarterfinals where he secured a 7-1 decision. Winning three straight matches sent Dellagatta into the semi-finals for the second consecutive year. In his semi-finals match, he grabbed a 5-0 decision win. That win advanced him to his first State Championship finals. In his final high school wrestling match as a Green Knight, Michael finished off a magical senior season with a 6-3 decision win to become a State Champion.
Mullen '23 came into the championships as the defending state champion. He started the championships as the 1st seed as well and kicked off the weekend with back to back pins in the Preliminary and Pre-Quarterfinal rounds. In the Quarterfinals, Mullen rolled with a 6-1 decision. In the semifinals, he dominated, winning 16-3 by technical fall. For the third time, Mullen was headed to the state finals. In the finals, he put together his most dramatic performance of the weekend. With the match tied 3-3 and just seconds to go in regulation, Mullen got the takedown that put him up 5-3 as the clock hit 0:00. This win brought him his third state championship becoming just the 3rd heavyweight in NJ State history to win 3 State Championships. He is the second Green Knight with three state championships.
Overall the weekend in Atlantic City was a huge success as 10 Green Knights were medalists. The team was also recognized as the #1 team in New Jersey for their accomplishments this season.
