The Green Knights returned to regular season conference play against Paramus Catholic on Tuesday night.
SJR was triumphant last time out against Paramus Catholic, scoring a 5-0 win on Senior Night. This time, the Green Knights were on the opposite side of a senior night and had a lot to prove.
The game kicked off under the lights in Paramus and SJR started the game on the front foot. They created several chances and beautiful combinations early in the game. A few early chances from freshman Gert Deitmer and junior Max Del Toro were just inches away from hitting the back of the net.
The breakthrough finally came with just under 10 minutes left, when Max Del Toro sliced through the Paladins' defense with a perfect pass over the top that found the foot of Giancarlo Lombardo. The senior tapped it home, notching his first career varsity goal. Lombardo added after the game, "I've had a few really good chances this season so to finally get that first goal was amazing and something I've been fantasizing about throughout my 4 years here."
In the second half, SJR came out looking to put the game to bed. They played with a ton of intensity, once again creating numerous chances in front of the goal. With just 3 minutes left, junior goalkeeper Jacob Hook launched the ball forward, finding the head of Max Del Toro who led the ball perfectly into the path of captain Daniel Butler who converted the one-on-one opportunity to seal the victory.
Freshman Nico Tyjer added a third goal, the first of his young career, just one minute later to finish off the 3-0 victory. The freshman and sophomore center-back duo of Ethan Shelton and Quinn Brennan were superb and made life easy for the goalkeeper.
The Green Knights have now swept the Paladins for the first time since 2022 and have snapped a 4-game losing streak. SJR will look to make it 2 in a row when they host DePaul Catholic in a heated conference match up on Thursday, October 23.
