Brother William Cushing, C.F.X. was a member of the SJR faculty from September of 1967 through June of 1997. He was also SJR’s Athletic Director and Director of Studies from 1980 through 1993. He was named the school’s fifth Principal in 1993, a position he held through 1997.

Aside from Tony Karcich, who succeeded him, Brother William was the longest tenured Athletic Director in school history. He was also a long time teacher of English and Theology. Following his thirty year career at SJR, Brother William served the Xaverian Brother community at the Christ the King Major Seminary in Nyeri, Kenya, just outside Nairobi, teaching seminarians and directing the Christ the King library for twenty years.

During his tenure as Athletic Director, Brother William oversaw the addition of lacrosse as an interscholastic sport (1988), as well as the restoration of bowling as an interscholastic sport in 1983. He was also SJR’s golf coach from 1978 to
1989.
