Athletic Hall of Fame
For area sports fans, John Flaherty needs no introduction. He is currently a broadaster for the YES network after a fourteen year major league career in which he played 1047 games with the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees. He posted a lifetime batting average of .252 with 80 home runs and 395 RBIs. In 1996, had a 27 game hitting streak, third all-time for a major league catcher behind Sandy Alomar (30) and Benito Santiago(34).
Flaherty has distinguished himself by giving back to his community, and, of course, to St. Joseph Regional High School; he was a great help to the renovation of the Media Center television studio. He has visited SJR on a number of occasions to speak with our students about sports journalism and his broadcast experiences.
As a Green Knight, John was a member of the 1984 league and county championship team. His senior year, he hit over .500 and earned First Team All-League and All-County honors; he was well-known as a formidable defensive catcher with a rocket for an arm. His high school success led him to George Washington University, where he also excelled en-route to his professional career, which began in 1992 with the Boston Red Sox.
