On Tuesday night the Green Knights defeated St. Peters Prep in the first round of the Non-Public A state hockey tournament to advance to the Quarterfinals round to face St. Augustine.
SJR came into the game having already beaten St. Peters Prep twice this season, 5-1 in December and 3-1 earlier in the month. Tuesday night it was a 4-0 shutout over the Marauders.
SJR opened up the game hot, scoring 3 goals in the first period. The first came from Jason Janeau 9:27 into the period with assists coming from Shane Tobin and Oleksii Koval. Logan Hughes notched the Green Knights their second goal of the evening just a minute later with Ryan Beanland and Greg Zimmer assisting. To follow up his assist Beanland scored a goal with 45 seconds left to close out the period.
In the second period SJR scored just 1 goal. That lone goal came from Nikita Bogatyrev after he skated the full length of the ice and scored on St. Peters Prep goalie PJ Levy toward the end of the period.
The third period went scoreless and Green Knights wrapped up a 4-0 win.
In net, Junior Gabe Florio saved all 8 shots he faced marking his 5th shutout of the season and 7th time having an 1.000 save percentage.
With a state tournament win in hand, the Green Knights will head to Hollydell Ice Arena to face the 4th seed St. Augustine on Thursday at 3:50 PM.
