The 8th-seeded SJR Green Knights upset top-seeded Northern Valley Old Tappan on Friday night to advance to the semifinal round of the Bergen County Tournament.
The Green Knights were powered by their three senior captains who each chipped in with RBIs. Bucknell signee Ryan McCabe led the way with 2 RBIs, while Wilkes University bound Lorenzo Zeccardi followed with one RBI of his own. Brady Shust brought the power with a solo home run. Shust, the Wake Forest football commit, leads the team with five homers on the year. The seniors' leadership proved crucial in the upset victory. Sophomore Kevin Foley also left his mark on the game with an RBI of his own.
On the mound, Daniel Alvarez was stellar, throwing a total of 100 pitches through six innings. The junior right-handed pitcher struck out seven batters, while allowing two runs on just five hits. Lorenzo Zeccardi was called on to close out the game in the seventh inning and he delivered. Zeccardi allowed just one hit, but most importantly, zero runs. The Green Knights came away victorious 5-2, upsetting the #1 seeded Old Tappan Knights in a massive statement victory.
SJR is now riding a four game winning streak as they head into perhaps the most important week of the 2026 season. The Green Knights have a doubleheader with arch rivals Bergen Catholic on May 11 and May 13. Then, on Saturday May 16th, Coach Mark Cieslak will lead his team into battle against #5 seeded Ramapo for a chance to head to the Bergen County Final for the 4th time since 2020.
